Advocating for Autism Awareness

Ruben Digital Media Advocates For Autism Awareness

By Jordyn Holliday

Learn how you can make a difference by becoming an advocate for autism awareness

Ruben Digital Media takes a great amount of pride in the work done for clients: web design, social media marketing, blogging, etc. However, RDM understands the importance of staying active and educated on issues that affect the world we live in. Today we’d like to bring attention to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). According to Autism Speaks, “Autism is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the U.S.”

This range of brain development disorders is now affecting one in every 68 children in the United States. Now more than ever, people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families need the comfort of knowing they are understood and are not alone on the journey. The good news is that there are numerous simple ways to lend a helping hand. Below are suggestions of actions that can be taken by all of us to increase overall awareness and promote advocacy for ASD, outlined in three categories:

  • Research ASD
  • Participate in autism walks
  • Donate to advocacy organizations

Research

With so much information circulating online regarding autism, both accurate and inaccurate, it’s important to seek facts from credible sources and organizations. It’s safe to start research with scientific journals, websites of medical schools and science-based organizations. These organizations include Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative, Autism Society and of course Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization. You can also research using resources at your local library. Public, medical and university libraries often offer access to more databases than what is accessible online.

Walks for Autism

There are hundreds of events dedicated to raising autism awareness that take place each year in the United States. The most common types are walks & runs for autism. Participants often establish fundraising teams and dedicate their participation to someone close them who may be on the autism spectrum. Others volunteer just to be part of a meaningful cause. Whatever one’s motive may be, there are many opportunities to participate. Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds in the autism community. Check out their list of upcoming Autism Speaks Walks to find one in your area.
